100 Incredible Films (Vol. 3 ~ 80-71)

Updated on October 28, 2016

# 80 ~~~ The United States of Leland (2003)

This film ponders how a kind, thoughtful and sensitive young man could suddenly turn violent and kill a young retarded boy in his care. This movie holds the distinction of being the only film I know that is so powerful that it doesn't make you cry until the credits start to roll. You just want to stop time and go back and fix all the wrong things that happened. You want everyone to understand Leland and not to misinterpret him anymore. But was it indeed a mercy killing? You get to decide. Just like with all great films.

# 79 ~~~ Bound (1996)

Finally! The lesbian gangster movie that we've all been waiting forever for. No fake gangsters or fake lesbianism either. This film which was destined for cult stardom as soon as it was green-lighted, delivers the real enchilada! Best lesbian love scene since Catherine Deneuve & Susan Sarandon got down in the 1983 David Bowie vampire flick The Hunger. Hot stuff.

# 78 ~~~ American Psycho (2000)

Huey Lewis serves a purpose!

Christian Bale returns from anonymity to capture glory in one of the most frighteningly real yet seemingly hilarious films to date. Like Fight Club or A Clockwork Orange, this film revels in it's own bloody mischief and asks us to try not enjoying his bloodlust. Patrick Bateman is the fearless rich guy who does whatever and whoever he wants and that's what makes him appealing and terrifying.

# 77 ~~~ The Basketball Diaries (1995)

First of all, if you haven't seen it yet. Don't watch it until you read the classic book it is based on. This was the one film that River Phoenix always wanted to make you know. He carried a copy of it around with him everywhere until his tragic death. It is sort of weird seeing anyone else but if it had to be someone else I'm glad it was Leo. He is the only kid his age who is capable of all this texture without letting the audience know it's going on a/k/a Good Acting.

# 76 ~~~ Alpha Dog (2006)

This movie blew my mind last year when I saw it. The ONLY wrong with this film is the presence of the always terrible Sharon Stone. She is, again, awful but luckily most of her scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. The young talent on display here is mesmerizing. I mean, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster AND Anton Yelchin, hello? Throw in breakout star Justin Timberlake and you got the makings of a suprise hit....so........SURPRISE! Rent it now!

# 75 ~~~ Empire of the Sun (1987)

Introducing Christian Bale

If you have never seen it, then you know what to do. This is that movie that EVERY critic was screaming about when it was omitted from the Oscar ballots. Many thought it was Steven Spielberg's best work AND he discovers frickin' Christian Bale on top of it all. If you like Christian Bale, like I obviously do then get on this flick pronto.

A young boy is separated from his parents in a war-torn China and survives thanks to the tutelage of a fellow POW (the almost always awesome John Malkovich) .

# 74 ~~~ My Bodyguard (1980)

My favorite movie from childhood is still good today I'm proud to say. When new kid "Peach" moves into town and quickly lands in the crosshairs of a paperweight bully named Moody (Matt Dillon) he seeks protection. He sets out to befriend the one kid that everybody is afraid of. Linderman. The kid who most students believe shot his own brother and belongs back in the nuthouse. But Peach makes a decent plea and two oddballs begin an unlikely friendship. Once Moody finds out "his reign has ended" he enlists an even bigger lunatic to be his bodyguard. Watch the clip!

# 73 ~~~ To Die For (1995)

The Infamous Letter Scene

Suzanne Stone is just looking for a little attention. How far should the average up-and-comer go to get the attention they crave so badly? Well, in Suzanne case there are no boundaries. Someone who gets the way of her dream of being a famous news reporter will be seen only as a target. Don't believe me? Just ask her dead husband.

# 72 ~~~ Hustle & Flow (2005)

In Case You Didn't Know............., It's Hard out Here for a Pimp!

Terrance Howard was pursued to play the rapper Djay for over a year before he finally relented and agreed that this was NOT just another Hip-Hop movie. This was not just another movie, period. Craig Brewer's film about a Memphis pimp going through a mid-life crisis that decides to be an emcee in the growing Dirty South game is a gritty four star affair across the boards. Props to the Three Six Mafia for winning an Academy Award for Best Song in a Motion Picture with their song "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp".

# 71 ~~~ Logan's Run (1976)

"Only #71? Dude, no way! This is the greatest movie of All-Time!!! " screams that little voice from inside my head.

Logan's Run was the greatest science fiction film of the 1970s for a almost a year until Star Wars came out and blew away everything in it's path. Logan's Run is just so awesome though. The music, the dialogue, the sets, the costume (singular), and my favorite - the miniature city model. They will be making a remake and it won't be half as good guaranteed. Besides they already remade this movie a few years ago. It was called The Island and it starred Scarlett Johansson and Ewen McGregor. If you liked that movie you will LOVE LOVE LOVE Logan's Run. It's real dated but that's okay because like with Flash Gordon it's the cheezyness that keeps us coming back for more.
