The 50 Most Embarassing Guilty Pleasure Movies That I Just Can't Deny (a/k/a The House that Patrick Swayze Built)

First of all, what makes up a guilty pleasure movie? There are certain films that are cliche in this genre such as 9 & 1/2 Weeks or Showgirls but I am here to tell you, that nudity isn't a prerequisite. A guilty pleasure movie is a mindless thing that we can't quite explain that makes us enjoy bad films. Not only enjoy them but...*gulp* own them. Movies that you own but don't leave in public view.

There is also a difference between a "good" guilty pleasure movie and a shamefully bad one. Good guilty pleasure is when the people making the film are in on the joke. I mean seriously, you must be aware when these films come out. Snakes on a Plane is a perfect example of "Good" bad vs. Anaconda which was Bad bad. What's the difference, you ask? Well I'll tell you.

Samual L. Jackson and everyone else involved in this picture Snakes on a Plane knew exactly how silly the whole thing was and played to that end with stupid funny dialogue. I'll bet you already know one terrifically bad line from it even if you didn't see it. The film was designed to relieve people's stress over terrorist plane attacks.

Anaconda however is about a snake so big and fake looking that we laugh at it, not with it. This is also Bad-bad because people like Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez a) shouldn't act at all, ever. and b) thought this film would advance their careers. If these two hadn't agreed to do it, it wouldn't even have gotten made.

The following 10 films are Good-Bad okay? ~Meaning that the filmmakers intended them to be just as bad as they are.

# 1 ~~~ Flash Gordon

# 2 ~~~ Rocky Horror Picture Show

# 3 ~~~ The Lost Boys

Hello DJ Funktual: I have to say that I actually rate the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was obviously written in a burst of delight and inspiration it's hard not to fall for it. I also rate Dark City, though Keifer Sutherland is really hamming it up. Purple Rain, though! I think you might be in need of therapy.

I hated to see Pet Semetary on that list!! While the movie was average, at best, the book was great!!! As a huge Stephen King fan, it hurt to see that one on there. A better choice for a really bad Stephen King movie would have been Sleepwalkers. That movie was just awful!!!

Pet Cemetary was hilarious!   I didn't read the book, but Stephen King books tend to be OK to good.

Cult classics like Rocky Horror should have their own classification:  "Movies that you dress up in fishnet tights and throw toilet paper at the screen when you go to them and it's OK"

Keep these coming -- we use 'em to decide what to rent for the weekend and sometimes you dig up some moldies like the farrah fawcett flick that the younger generation has never even seen.

Anyway, this gave me an idea for a new hub. Watch for it soon!

I rarely admit this, but I own all four Tremors movies. I also kinda like Miss Congeniality. OOPS! Did I say that out loud?

I have a shameful weakness for George of the Jungle, she says, losing all credibility ever.

The first time I saw Rocky Horror was at a full-on live performance, throwing toast at the screen and everything. It was fun, though I spent most of the movie wondering what the hell was going on.

I always forget how funny Clue and Soapdish are.

Dude, hah ha... Flash Gordon is STILL awesome if you watch in the right mindset.  I mean, that's Queen in the soundtrack right?

And, Cannon Ball Run... seriously... I practiced, perfected and STILL retain my ability to contort my finger into the proper finger probe position as concieved in the ambulance scenes (although I will not practice the procedure, sorry for those who held out hope).  People who have not seen this movie have no clue.

DJ, while I will protest that you put The Dark Crystal at the end, as if it were somehow not a great and epic classic (a total misstep on your part, but forgivable), I must say with a resounding thumbs up that you have a great list here.  Nice work.

Shady - I wasn't dissing any of the movies you mentioned. You seem to have missed my whole point in the intro, but no matter. Thanks for stopping by.

Rhym - You were one of my nominees!

No, I know you liked them, that was my point totally; appreciated you recognizing those gems. I only beefed that The Dark Crystal showed up as if it was a "lost gem." That movie proved itself on it's own merits in my opinion. I'm with you dude, totally. I missed nothing. Rock on man.

A couple of those films are definitely on my guilty pleasures list; especially Mars Attacks and Rocky Horror Picture Show. Great hub, as usual.

Is this an attempt at trolling? Really? What's so guilty about enjoying a well made movie? Because the film makers are in on the joke? What joke? Where is the Joke in Lost Boys? Rocky Horror Picture? Lucky # Slevin? Rounders? Dark Crystal? Four Rooms? Have you actually watched any of these movies? Or do you just pass them off becuase of your Cliche new age art? Movies your told are great by news and ad-campaigns. Let me guess, you LOVED lord of the rings and cloverfield. You can't get enough of Twilight your ecstatic about the Davinic Code. Man do you have issues

I really can't consider Rocky Horror as a quilty pleasure since it has become a mainstream cult film. Mars Attacks is also a mainstream cult item. For me a true quilty pleasure is something like the Brain that Wouldm't Die or Dr. Blood's Coffin perhaps. I think once a film has developed such a loyal and passionate following like Rocky Horror it no longer is a quilty pleasure. Was a interesting and good hub never the less.

I really love those old sword-and-sandal movies like Beastmaster and Barbarians.

RIP Patrick Swayze

PJ (unsigned) 2 years ago

Nothing embarrassing about owning a Patrick Swayze movie. In fact, Road House is my favourite Swayze film - I don't like Dirty Dancing so RH is it.

My other fave is Speed the first one because of the bomb on the bus, and the fact that I sort of like Sandra Bullock. She makes an ideal love interest for Keanu Reeves.

House of D is a great movie. Your list sucks.

Red Dawn would have to be on my list. So corny but so much fun! If I catch it tuning through the channels, I invariably end up watching it. Drives my family crazy. Except my oldest son, he thinks its cool too.
