100 Best Movie Soundtrack Songs
80Blue-Eyed Soul from Dublin ... The Commitments.
The songs listed below don't have to appear on a soundtrack album to be eligible for this list and they are not automatically eligible if they were. These are basically 'Movie Moments" where no other song could have captured the moment like these did. I also tried to avoid using musicals like 'Grease' or 'Willie Wonka' or biographical films about musicians like La Bamba or Walk The Line since that's just too easy.
How powerful can the music be?

It all started when I read your profile and your top 10 all-time favorite movies. Thought I recognized a kindred spirit. Keep up the great work, I love your hubs.
Would you consider Things Have Changed by Bob Dylan, from the Wonder Boys soundtrack?
Did read the intro, sorry...haven't watched the movie in a very long time, it's what I think of when I hear the song. But you're right, I guess it really is more of a connection than defining moment thing.
What the....
Happy Birhtday to You! Happy Birthday to You! You deserve cheap-assed steak knives. Happy Birthday to you!
Sorry I haven't been around. I've been soooo friggin' busy. (Which is a good thing)
You can email me here. (Take out the EATSPAM)
mthead3000EATSPAM@yahoo.com
Not that I see a lot of movies, unless they are kid movies anymore, but of those that I have watched, the ones on your list, when I hear them now, I think of the movie. Especially holiday road and the Shallow Hal one.
Great job. Donna
FOOTBALL RAP by LL COOL J (The closing credits song with Goldie Hawn and cast) WILDCATS
Aw Hell yeah!
i would of put football rap way higher...not sure if you had any songs from the departed on the list? i could go back and check but i am lazy...how bout the end credit song? who is that Ray Lamontagne? prob the most underated guitar player ever.
The Dueling Banjos - Deliverance.... :O)
I dig the whole list, but when I got to number 51 (Rolling With My Homies, in Clueless), that brought me baaaaaaaaaack. That movie was full of great music pairings. Another one that comes to mind:
"All The Young Dudes," with Cher talking about the greasy highschool boys being the reason she's a virgin...
Anyway, great list. As always, your hubs are full of thought and show your love for music, plainly!
Ah, the memories! You know, I still sometimes find myself singing "Supermodel" (by Jill Sobule, from the movie, NOT the RuPaul song, in case there's any ambiguity) in the shower, getting dressed, or walking down the street with girlfriends...
Although, actually, I've been known to sing the RuPaul song too. ;)
Paul Rudd, yes. Paul Ruud is my father, among others. It's a rather popular name among Scandinavians and Scando-Americans.
I'll check it out. Sounds right up my alley!
PS: I loved "The Commitments." Been many years, perhaps I should rent it again...
Brilliant Hub... your list is eclectic, superior and that of a raving lunatic. I love your organized madness. I can't wait to read more.
DJ - EXCELLENT JOB !!!
Boy!! This Must Have Taken you a year to gather info on and write about
Loved the BeetleJuice Number
Just Wanted To add one to the list of my own personal favorites:
Remember The Breakfast Club and The Simple Minds Tune "Don't You Forget About Me"
I have to nominate another one. "Let my love open the door" Pete Townshed. During the family talent show in Dan In Real Life. Gets me every time.
how about down with the sickness-dawn of the dead
and we belong-talledaga nights
Great hub! You are all of the place but I want to read more. :)
-Your newest fan
Wow! I'm just going to quote Rhym here "May I start out by saying that no one could possibly read any of your hubs and not realize the incredible amount of thought you put into them." Over and over...I'm fascinated by your columns! Fantastic!
hi so much
#64, "Everybody's talking". That one song made the movie. Midnight Cowboy, itself, was a very disturbing movie. If it had not been for Voight's acting, a few nude scenes and some great music, it would be a bust. Instead, it is an American classic.
wow this is really great list.... most of the listed songs i know about..and they are really nice ...thanx for sharing...
aren,t there hindi songs???????????????
I love this list and would be hard pushed to pick my number one from it thre are only two films mentioned that I have not seen.
I'd have to add 'Superfreak' from "Little Miss Sunshine" - defining moment in which the vision of a stoned (and very recently dead) grandfather propels his grandaughter willingly into the spotlight where she totally teras apart the sick notion of beauty pageants for little girls.
Great list.
I tried to listed/watch some of the videos, but they have all been removed.
I love this one
NOW THAT I'VE FOUND YOU by THE FOUNDATIONS (Closing theme to) SHALLOW HAL
Great songs! Great scenes! Great hub!
I'm glad you included Wise Up from Magnolia. It's a great scene.
Not on your list, but the scene in Almost Famous where the characters (one by one) start singing along to Tiny Dancer always get my full attention.
Summer Nights in Grease is a fun scene.
Uncle Fucka in South Park is hilarious!
I don't think I could compile a list this comprehensive even WITH Google! You are amazing! Makes me want to soundtrack my own life!
Here are two that I would add:
1. "Afternoon Delight" as sung by Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and his cronies (in harmony) in Anchorman.
2. I like the one you picked for Goodfellas, but my absolute FAVE is the cocaine-paranoid-helicopters-are-on-your-tail-and-the-shit's-about-to-go-down scene. I can never listen to Nilson's "Jump Into the Fire" without thinking of Henry Hill...
Disappointing. I thought these were going to be movie songs. These are songs thrown into movies probably because they didn't want to pay some song writers and performers to do original music for the movies. Why promote such a cheap-ass way of donig things?
Yep a really great list...great memories of songs and movies....and a fantastic resource for a night of relaxation!
the song sweet jane was originally by velvet underground in the late sixties and is the greatest song of all time you should listen to it
Don't forget "the touch" from Transormers 86 AND Boogie Night!!STAN BUSH!
good start but I suggest you see more movies and try again. I mean you don't even have neil young's philadelphia from the movie philadelphia or bob dylans knockin on heavens door from pat garrett and billy the kid or the doors the end from apocalypse now or mr. sandman from halloween etc etc etc try again
What about "My Heart will go on" in Titanic?
Great list and I agree with 80% of the songs listed. But you forgot a couple. Theme song to The Good, Bad and the Ugly and the theme song to Cool Hand Luke. You really should consider putting these at least in your top 25.
Hi maybe you could add Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' to the list? Its from the movie 8 Mile and its a pretty classy song also 'Little Wonders' by Rob Thomas from Meet the Robinsons and 'You're Gonna Go Far, Kid' by The Offspring from Van Wilder: Freshman Year?
Hey just wondering did you consider Elton Johns-Tiny Dancer from ALmost Famous i thought that scene was priceless.
Other then that good list, keep up the good work and i totally agree with you when you say Queens album, Flash Gordon is the greatest soundtrack ever made by a rock band.
Peace Out and Keep Up The Good Work!
Whitney Houston's I will always love you, from the the best selling movie soundtrack of all time is not on this list?
I agree with most of it. I would add, "If You Were Here" by the Thompson Twins for the last scene in Sixteen Candles.
"I Believe" by Stevie Wonder for the last scene/ending credits of High Fildelity. That one is perfect because Jack Black makes such a big deal out of not having "I Just Called To Say I love You" and he also asks if it wrong to punish a formerly great artist for his latter day sins, is it better to burn out or fade away? And then of course because Rob is making the mix tape for Laura, with things she would like. Multiple reasons it is a great movie song.
I always think of Bandits, not Footloose for "I Need A Hero." I also think of Bandits for "Total Eclipse of the Heart.
what about "chariots of fire"
didn't make the list, but easily better than any here.
Two songs from Pulp Fiction and no Ghostbusters? Come on. Who ya gonna call?
Correction: THREE songs from Pulp Fiction and no Ghostbusters. That's a crime.
what about "Tiny Dancer" in Almost Famous
what about "I don't want to miss a thing"?
"Bittersweet Symphony" Cruel Intentions
Guns and roses You could be mine. Terminator 2
awesome list.
Vanilla Ice, Ninja Rap TMNT2
What about "My Sharona" by the Knack...from the movie Reality Bites?
showdown, from kingpin.
What an awesome selection! Great hub.
Great list. Do you happen to know what movie that starred Cher, Bette Midler, and sorry, can't remember the third. The three of them ( at least Cher was) sang Mr. Sandman. Neither my husband or I can think of the name of the movie.
.... and "Midnight run" By Danny Elfman
Enjoyed the list. I didn't see Leaving Las Vegas in there anywhere. I haven't seen the movie in a while, yet I remember "Lonely old town" and "Angel eyes" beautifully interwoven with the emotion of the story.
And the movie "Thief" (a while back) used Tangerine Dream to great effect.
Karate Kid song needs to be moved up to top 20 imo!!
No banana splits by dickies in the film kick-ass?
ultraviolence with a childrens tv theme song...
works. really. well.
Trisha Yearwood - How Do I Live. closing scene of Con Air.
perfect.
Great list - this is something to be proud of. A couple of my choices - Top Gun tunes - Danger Zone, Take my Breath Away, and Mess Around from Planes, Trains, and Autos.
Dueling Banjos: Eric Weissberg & Steve Mandell
Love the list, but I would have to include, from Purple Rain, "The Beautiful Ones." I cannot hear the song without visualizing the movie.
Amazing! Thanks!
This list is amazing! Thank you!
Hmm... Not too shabby, but I'm confused how Neil Diamond's America could be in a movie made in 1927...
Few of them are my lifetime favourites!! By the way, Thanks a million for the list, I will try other tracks also!
Great List One That Should Be in the top 10 is Gary Jules' "Mad World" at the end of Donnie Darko. Or even Echo and the bunny mens' "The Killing Moon" at the beginning of Donnie Darko.
What about New Divide from Linkin Park in Transformers 2 and Lose Yourself by Eminem in 8 Mile? C'mon, those were great!
SPACE JAM by QUAD CITY DJs
You forgot sugarhigh by coyote shivers in empire records!!
First of all...Great list ! I spent much time with your Hub's !! Q Lazzarus caused Goose pimples (is that the right word ?!), great song :) But i miss Oliver Onions Songs, the whole "Death Proof" Soundtrack is great, Top Gun, Old habits die hard (Alfie), All i need is you (Over the Top), No easy way out (Rocky), Oakenfold - Ready steady go (Collateral) and things like that !
Greets from Germany ;)
Statler Brothers - Flowers on the wall.... Bruce Willis in this Honda !
great list, thanks for sharing
oh god your 100 is so wrong, you forget about platoon, fight club, 28 days later, the pianist. i dont think i need to go on but i will ammend your whole site of you like so that its actually sane
these days - nico (margot gets off bus to see brother in) The Royal Tenenbaums
Hi movieman
Some excellent choices - some weird i.e. the one from Silence of the Lambs - that gave me shivers! I was surprised no Against all Odds, Phil Collins. Great reading though, thanks.
the doors - the end. opening scene of apocalypse now
I just got finished watching The Warriors and got to thinking about the best songs played at the end of a movie. In the city has got to be one of the best for me. So I did a search for others and found this list.
Duuude, just reading through that list brought back so many good memories of great movies!
Great list. I really like "Love on railtrain" with tangerine dreams from the movie Risky Business and "don´t fear the reaper" with blue oyster cult from the stand. Another favorite is the main theme from das boot or "pet semetary" with the ramones from Pet semetary.
But your list was truly amazing.
you make my dreams by hall and oates in (500) days of summer. that. scene. rocks. mostly because of the contrast between that scene and the next one, otherwise, an astoundingly good list
Great playlist!! Thanks a million
Great suggestions for both classic movies and amazing songs !
What a great list. Thank you!
I miss the soundtrack from "Requiem for a dream"!!!!!!!!!
best soundtrack ever!!!!
hear the original at youtube and i promise you, that you want to watch the film!!! ;)
Pretty cool list! Thanks
Bennie and the Jets from the bar scene of 27 Dresses!!
Great List!!
John Murphy's - Sunshine
Twist and shout, Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Really?! How memorable was that. Its just a transient song in that film.
But yet no Ghostbusters, Neverending Story, Magic Dance (Labyrinth), the Last Unicorn, He's Back (Jason 7), The Gael (The Last of the Mohicans), The Living Daylights, Story Book Love (The Princess Bride) and more.
These are all exciting, memorable and canonical songs written specifically for those great movies.
Unlike "WALKING ON SUNSHINE by KATRINA AND THE WAVES (Used in too many films to count but hilarious in)"
New Dawn Fades - Moby (joy division cover) used when Pacione follows Deniro on the highway in HEAT
I'm looking for another movie soundtrack.
Pretty huge list of movie soundtrack songs.
Thanks.
lisa gerrard now we are free in gladiator, music couldnt sum up the situation any better
How about Gimme Some Loving from Days of Thunder. Fits in perfectly with Tom Cruise learning about NASCAR
Thank you so very much for taking the time to compose this list it totally ROCKS! :)
Great list! One of my favorite movie moments highlighted by a fantatic song would be in the movie "Like Father, Like Son" when Kirk Cameron decks the school bully. As his fist makes contact with the bully's face, in slow-mo, Motley Crue's Wild Side comes blasting in! AWESOME!
How come "Cruel Intentions" soundtrack is not anywhere on the list?
The Rock (1996) undefeatable soundtracks and best of the bests from the beginning till the end.
When I go to this site I receive the following virus:
Trojan.JS.lframe.rr
Can someone contact the owner of this site about this? I can't find a "Contact Us" link on this website in order to contact him about it. Thanks.
huey lewis' hip to be square is not a terrible song!
i do love your article
thank
Great list ... one add: THe amazing E. Coli mix of Pete Townsend's "Let My Love Open the Door" from Grosse Point Blanke
Whoops ... How could I forget David Bowie's "The Heart's Filthy Lesson" from Se7en?
first off, GREAT LIST! Second, where are the Righteous Brothers with You've lost that lovin feelin? Top Gun Soundtrack. End credits.
Hi, really enjoyable choices, was humming away with memories. My age late 40's so if I did a list from the 60's/70's/80's I would name 'The Way we Were' (Barbara Streisand) and also Barbara for the movie she did with Kris Kristofferson 'A Star is Born' for the music, which sadly at this time the exact name of the theme tune escapes me, although I can remember the tune and words! It goes 'Love, soft as an easy chair, love, fresh as the morning air, One Love, that is shared by two...you know!! Anyway good read, thank you!
Woke up this morning (Sopranos)
u didnt see 'my heart will go on' anywhere. dissapointing :/
have you considered sympathy for the devil by the rolling stones in the credits for the movie Fallen
Thanks for your list!
How about "All Summer Long" at the end of American Graffiti?
Or "Bohemian Rhapsady" from Wayne's World...
Battleme - "Hey Hey, My My"
The last song, in the last show, on the 3rd season of SOA..Sweet potatoe!
I love the connection of pop/rock songs and movies. How about Charlie Sheen's theme in Major League, Wild Thing by the Troggs? How about (I can't get no) Satisfaction while going up river in Apocalypse Now? Bad to the Bone in Terminator 2? or 3? Just too many to get them all. I love this stuff......
surprised not to see any from almost famous on here that film has a amazing soundtrack
whats about soundtracks film """the messege?
Only english music
Only american films...
the list has no credibility
Hi, the song that slim whitman sang in "Mars attacks" that saved the world was "Indian Love Call" and not "I'm Casting My Lasso Towards The Sky". Hope this is of help.
tracks of my tears - deer hunter
Forest Gump almost all the songs
Butch cassidy - Raindrops keep falling on my head
Layla instumental exit good fellas
Cant you hear me Knocking Blow
Everybody Wants to Rule the World (REAL GENIUS) ... every time i hear it, i think of a house exploding from popping popcorn.
sinnerman - cellular
Great great list! loved it! although i was looking for "Angel" by Massive Attack, from Snatch, you know that scene where Brad Pitt's mum's caravan is burning, with his mum inside...I thought that was a genuine scene-maker.
Somebody else might have already suggested that, i was too lazy to read all the comments.
Where Is? Eddie & The Cruisers...On The Dark Side
What about when Ferris says goodbye to Sloane and The Edge of Forever by The Dream Academy.
great list but as far as fear and loathing goes i always thought of "expecting to fly" by buffalo springfield as the song the truly defines a moment in the movie as it occurs when thompson realizes the falseness of the ideals he had set out to live due to those "who never understood the essential old mystic fallacy of the acid culture"
what about 'Men In Black' by Will Smith
My goodness - where is Arms of an Angel?
John Murphy - Sunshine (Adagio in D Minor) from the movie Sunshine should be up there.
You obviously haven't seen the movie otherwise it would be one there. In fact there's no John Murphy or Danny Elfman or even Hans Zimmer which basically makes this list invalid.
Just letting you know that Making Time by creation is a fabulous song in one of my all time favorite movies Rushmore BUT it's not during Murray's run over bicycle revenge scene, its during the very beginning when they show all the clubs he is in at Rushmore. The bicycle scene has another great song A quick one while he's away by The Who.
"Jump in the Line" was used at the end of "Beetlejuice"
"The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" was the song used in the seance.
No Blues Brothers?
# 32 "Baby, it's cold outside" performed by Zooey Deschannel & Leon Redbone (not Will Ferrell)
What about Kashmir by Led Zeppelin? Defos one of the best movie soundtracks
What about "Staying alive" in Saturday night fever, "East bound and Down" in Smokey and the Bandit, "Fight to Survive" in Bloodsport, "Hurricane" by Bob Dylan in the Hurricane, "Don't you forget about me" in Breakfast Club, "Mad World" Donnie Darko, "Looking for Love" or "Cherokee Fiddle" in Urban Cowboy by Johnny Lee
Or "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis in Back to the Future, "Only the Young" by Journey in Vision Quest, "Born to be Wild" from Easy Rider, "White Wedding" from Wedding Singer,
good list. animal house scene with "hey, hey paula" was when Donald Sutherland smoked with his students. Check out "lunatic fringe" in the movie "Vision Quest". how about that Motown? song scene in Platoon when they were smoking through their guns.
Great list.
I love #3.
I would have gone with 'Let's Stay Together' from Pulp Fiction. "Walk On By" by Issac Hayes in "Dead Presidents" is also great. The whole Dead Presidents soundtrack is actually pretty money.
1.Goo Goo Dolls - Iris

DJ Funktual,
May I start out by saying that no one could possibly read any of your hubs and not realize the incredible amount of thought you put into them. I would also be surprized if there were a movie or song made that you HAVEN'T seen or heard. That being said, I shouldnt have tried to joke around with you like someone I know, because I dont. Sorry about that.
I also tried to think of what the "defining" moment was in the movie when Just Another was playing and you were right in that there wasn't any real action going on then .......and maybe this is a chick point of view, but....you have two best friends that are not just attracted to, but truely in love with the same woman and that same woman finally finds what she has been looking for, but only with both of them and knows that choosing just one will ruin everything. Then there is the song that takes all the things you feel right then and wraps it up like a gift that you get to open again and again. I can never hear that song now without immediately remembering that moment, and also maybe an impossible situation from my own past, and the bittersweet feeling that comes with it. To me, that is a defining movie moment.
You dont have to keep this comment either, as I really just wrote it to you to help explain what I meant before. I really wasnt trying to be a smartass.
