The 100 WORST #1 Songs of the 1980s.
82This is now my third WORST SONG list. I released the first one on my first day on the HUB and it was more successful than any list I actually cared about. Soooo, the second came out as a GUILTY PLEASURE list and it was right off the top of my head. But this third one has a prerequisite. It had to make it to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. Chronological would be boring so I ranked then in order of their idiocracy! Enjoy!
ALL PHOTOS SCANNED DIRECTLY FROM MY 45 COLLECTION!
Let the misery begin!

SOME OF THE DUMBEST LYRICS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully you enjoyed laughing at these songs too. Yes I bought them all when they were popular, but then again, I was a DJ and was required to have all the big hits. Luckily my tastes have evolved over the years. If you still love these songs and are offended, I'm sorry...sorry your tastes never evolved anyway.
Just in case you think that i am just bashing your 80's music....... GET A CLUE: this is what good 80's music sounds like.

DJ - hey man... you've done it again! Another addicting Hub... I've been real busy lately so sorry I haven't been around :-) We need to talk more about the questions you had...
PS: Nice to see Every Rose fairly low here :-)
I'd have to admit I like
34. ST. ELMO'S FIRE 42. HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH 58. THE LOOK 75. SARA
But I wish these would be banned from ever being played again:
GET OUTTA MY DREAMS, GET INTO MY CAR -
WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO-GO -
KOKOMO - DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY (I think the most annoying song ever written)
Ups! guilty.. I do like Flashdance and all the new versions of it -I suppose it is the flashy dancer inside me!
You embarass me now :-( no more guilty confessions for tonight :-)
Hi,
I like 5, 32 and 59, as far as the others, yes, they were awful!
thanks for sharing,
Trish
I'm several months late in reading this particular hub, but I just had to say that I love it! I have very fond memories of filming music videos in 5th grade music class. I was my group's "lead singer" for #87. Oh, yeah, good times!
I love flashdance....and a few others u listed....I'm blushing now
DJ: Interesting list. I agree with a whopping 93% of your choices here. Lots of garbage here. (For the record, I did like 14,28, 31, 34, 42, 50, and 83. I'm not proud of this fact, but I did and do still like 'em.) Fun hub!
Isn't that ALL of the songs of the 80s???? LOL I like far more of them than I can safely admit to.
I liked a lot of these songs the first #10 I can appreciate , clean lyrics and silly..
"Oh Mickey, your so fine, your so fine you blow my mind , hey Mickey!!!, hey Mickey"!!Lol loved the hub..:)
I also like a number of these songs.
what a shitty website, most of those songs are great. you are truly a faggot.
Dude, great list, love your work. However, you accidently put "ON MY OWN - patti labelle & michael mcdonald" double in your list, at 59 and 67. I know Micheal McDonald is a douchebag, but he perhaps he shouldn't be in the list with the same song twice.
And I have to admit, I also like several of these songs, just because of their camp value.
You are arrogant and not very in touch with the heart of the past,
you rate number -1 in my hottest bottom list of 100 "jerk-a-droids"(the only one on the list incidently), and you rate a zero on my list of decently talented Hubbers.
I'd say i agree about most of the list, especially Paula Abdul who I considered a hearing punishment.
But What have you done with MJ and Stevie Wonder. Ok, stevie Wonder looks like a Raelian ont the Cover, but Part-Time Lover is The Song.
And MJ. I believe Bad id above Thriller in quality, and I see 3 titles. Well, I can understand about I Just Can't Stop Loving You, which is a weak song facing Dirty Diana and Bad. But damn, Dirty Diana, even though its rank is 100, shouldn't be on the list. And why Bad #11 ? Need some explanations.
I agree on the most part though, Wham#3 is a great choice x).
I agree with most of them, but I like Michael Jackson - Bad a lot.
Like the concept and RT'd your link on Twitter along with a link to my personal list.
I'd say once you get past your top 20, you start to get to songs that I would not agree with. I love 80s music, so most of the songs on your list I consider to be awesome. Fun topic of conversation though.
lol:). I agree with all of this list! Though as an 80's child I listen to and rocked out to all of them. What can I say...the 80's was a time that I would really rather forget! Can we all look back at the past and say What Was I Thinking??? I know I can. Oh especially about the hair!! :)
I am sure that our kids will do the same about their music and stuff.
ps. I can't believe Thriller didn't make the list??What is up with that? Or Billie Jean? Though I used to skate to them all lol.
"Can't fight this feeling"...REO Speedwagon? Huge number one song....One of the best love songs of all time...R U nuts?
This list is a hoot.
I predict 10 of these turds will be sung even more shittastically on American Idol this season.
I really like Heaven and Karma Chameleon
They certainly did lots of mindless crap in the 1980s. What, no Prince tunes on this list?!... Impossible! You do very well producing these lists, Sir Funktual. You've found your calling in life. By the way, take "Private Eyes" off the list. What have you got against pop? Later, dude!
i actually think most of these songs are pretty enjoyable to listen to, for the fact that they're fun, danceable pop songs that aren't meant to be taken seriously. they also bring back good memories of the radio and MTV while i was a little kid. it also seems like the late 80s had more disposable pop than the early 80s. all in all, i'd say the 80s had much better pop, in my opinion, than the horrid 90s.
Dang! I'm surprised "Rock me Amadeus" didn't make the cut on any of these lists!
The list sucks. Go make a list about all the crappy music of the 21st century....
you're a retard. why is stevie wonder on here? michael jackson? this is a horrible list. i bet i could find way worse songs than you.
we didn't start the fire? how is that horrible lyrics? are you so musically illiterate that you don't even know what these songs mean? this list is disappointing.
FYC's "Good Thing" in the list of worst songs? You must be a retard. That's the point at which the men in white coats turn your machine off.
That's damn near all of the #1 songs in the 1980's, there's maybe only 20 you didn't include. Dumb list and a dumb idea. I could understand 10 of them, but 100 is stupid (you're including Michael Jackson and Hall & Oates?).
There are about 231 unique number 1 songs of the 80s. (http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/Number-One-
Therefore, a list of 100 songs is 43% of all 80s number 1s -- almost half. Admitting that you love the worst of the best is no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed. With just a few exceptions (Physical, for example) I love most of these songs.
They became number 1's because they were great. They wouldn't be on this worst list if they weren't great.
I agree with 95% of this list. But some of them are ok, like "Maneater".
You gutta be fucking me, I agree with rob.. I mean phil Collins and genesis on here? WTF, definetly opinionated..
ok a song that starts with the first line like this
taumatawhakatangihangaoauauotameteaturipukakpikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu
u rock
Michael Jackson? What have you got against the Bad album, anyway? It ain't about the music Bud- you just didn't like the image change....
I love almost all of these songs!!! Thanks for a putting together a great list of all my faves :)
Just reading this list makes me glad the 80s
are fucking over.. What a load of soulless pop
acts.... Phil Collins is still being inflicted on
me when I go to the store...Why couldn't
someone assassinate Hall and Oates instead
of John Lennon?
All of these songs sound horribly DATED which is absolute proof of their suckage. I notice Neil Young isn't on this list....oh that's right, he didn't sell out and therefore nothing of his is dated suckage.
This is a great list, I had no disagreements until 25+26 ... Centerfold and Maneater were kinda cool!
How could you leave off Love Will Lead You Back?! Certainly one of the most annoying songs ever!
Not sure if this song made number one but where is Joan Jett's: I Love Rock n Roll ?? Ugh....worst cheesiest song ever!
There just a few of those songs that don't deserve, in my opinion, to be on that list...
1) maneater - that bass line is dope and the intro keys sound like diamonds falling from the sky (which I often mimic with fluttering fingers on an extended hand panning down from head to lower torso). Plus the sax solo...good, simple song. Daryl and John show up a few times on your list, is there a reason you hate Hall and Oates? Or are you just upset they embraced pop music instead of sticking to their soul roots?
2) abracadabra - sweet simplicity evolves into progressive rock complexity. some may argue that the lyrics are lacking, but from the party song mastermind who's best known line is, "I really love your peaches wanna shake your tree..." what do you expect? The(album version)song climaxes into orchestrated fantasticness, complete with vocal round-a-bouts and sick guitar work. Good song.
3) tell her about it - classic billy joel. as far as I'm concerned this song proved that billy could include pop chart toppers on his records to satisfy the system while still keeping the die-hards bopping along.
4) sailing - dude, christopher cross deserves every bit of his legacy as a poor man's jimmy buffet. he delivers palatable contemporary vibes with sophisticated production. smooth, man...smooth. If i'm not mistaken, this track won the 1980 grammy for song of the year (big deal, right?) In addition, his laid back pink flamingo logo is the shiz-nizzle-bisquick.
Other than that you're pretty much spot on. Especially with "I'll be there for you", "we built this city", and "kokomo". those tunes mega-blow. Alright list, funk, it was nice to hub dig the archives and come up with this gem!
p.s. - bananarama's venus was left off of your list and that song is fucking terrible.
Not the greatest songs of all time, but still better than what's being foisted on us today.
This list obviously made up by someone who wish they had lived in the 80's but didnt, dont be hatin because all the music these days suck
You are a moron that probably needs to pull their pants off the ground & not wear your hat like someone just slapped you from left field, I see at least 2 songs that were definitely from the 70's, & several songs that you repeated throughout your list. And who are you to make a list? Just because you put DJ in front of some stupid hip hop wannabe name doesnt make you an expert on...well, anything. LMAO what a dork
I am not AT ALL ashamed to admit that I like A LOT of these songs... there really are only a few that I either don't like or have never heard. But I'm only 25, so I guess I have an excuse, haha. To be honest, this list made me wanna get some songs that I forgot I didn't have! Thanks, and great hub!
I agree with this list %100, the 80's was fucking terrible, I think Hip-Hop was the only decent thing to come out of the 80's music wise. I mean you compare the trash in this list to say, something from Paul's Boutique/Licensed to Ill or something that run-dmc or Public Enemy did and there is just no comparison. Those guys have all become timeless recording artists and the 'artists' on this list have all fallen into obscurity. The pop 'music' of today is a reflection of the shit that was coming out of that time.
Your disclaimer says "all photos scanned from your 45 collection." Apparently, you didn't think it sucked when you threw down $1.99 for those particular songs at Sam Goody. Explain yourself.
PS: I'm the person with "Satisfied" by Richard Marx in my iPod. Yes, I'm the one.
add Heartlight by Neil Diamond LOL! I love little squishy ET! (wait did this ever make it to #1 who cares shoulda if it didn't!) I will admit it is one of the few sleeves I have left. The rest of my 45's are in round puke green "Disc Go" cases. And I have 100's. My Daughter snuck some to hang on her walls with thumb tacks what's up with that? My treasures now hopelessly scratched :(.
Just out of curiousity, where would you place "Roxanne Roxanne" by UTFO? Would it be towards the bottom of the list of 80s hits?
What's interesting was that from 84 through 86 you could hardly escape the "Roxanne Wars" in one form or another whereas nowadays nobody talks about them at all.
80s...
Why are some people getting their panties in an bunch. Its just his opinion. Its for fun, I think alot of the songs are right on point. Just plain bad!! The 80's had alot of bad music, but that's just my honest opinion.
"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" is awesome! God I love that song. Then again, I unabashedly love a lot of 80's music. Especially compared to a lot of the stuff passing for music now a days.
This is BULL SHIT. I am an 18 year old girl. Did NOT grow up in the 80's, yet I love them, for most of the songs the lyrics are the best part of the song. I disagree with this list 100%. I am curious what you guys actually call "good" music nowadays......
I was a teenager in the early 80's at college and having a great time. While I got to say we had fun with these songs I got to agree that most of them sucked. Real nice list you got here but one is missing, Can't remember the name of the song but it was by a group call The Pink Flamingos. Caused a stir in the UK cause I remember the news reports about how shops said they wheren't selling the record but BBC said it was UK no.1... Chart fixing at it's best... oh, and how about Flock of Seagulls.... wow, I think I could keep adding to your list.... All the best to all out there. Live life, have fun.
A lot of these songs are good.
Unless I missed it while scanning through here- "Carrie" by Europe- Terrible song!!
Some songs are actually great!
Let me guess, another one who adores Coldplay?
Even the most cheesy 80's song is miles better than the crap we hear today, including coldplay.
Congrats on your 12000 followers..... still a nobody in my book!
You have a song on twice. On my Own by Patti Labelle. 59 and 67 Must have not really liked that song.
Thanks dude! Won a bet with this, the guy thought there werent any bad songs in the 1980's, but apparently he is a HUGE fan of Michael Mcdonald, lol.
Ahem! WHY IS BON JOVI ON THIS LIST!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! It's worthless and someone like you should actually think and not just sit there and slap random songs onto the screen. Seriously it's stupid. Get a brain and LEARN! sorry. Had to get it off my chest
ALL the songs by Guns and Roses..... Axl Rose sounds like Ethel Merman. Too bad they didnt have a better singer... the music was good.
Thanks for making up a list of the songs I love!
Look Away by Chicago has got to be in the top 5 of the all time worst songs list. It's a song about a guy admitting to crying like a little b^^^h and not wanting some chick to see it? She should look and laugh right in his wussy face.
Ha, I have almost every one of these songs on my iPod. Oh well, Thanks for the list, You Rock! :D!
Starship has two in the top 10!? "We Built This City" By Starship was just ranked in a poll by Rolling Stone as the worst hit of the '80's...so you were pretty much "in-range" with your list. I think "Mickey" should stand head and shoulders above all the others as the worst one of the '80's...but that's just my opinion. Oh No...I can hear the words to that song in my head still...from only just mentioning it by name. AAAAGGGGHHH!
you mentioned "on my own" at least twice. is the song that bad?
Hey dumbass, Alec John Such did not quit Bon Jovi. He got fired because he wasn't playing well and was messing up on stage. Get your facts right before you criticize people who are more talented than you.
oh come on how can you not like Maniac, Flashdance or Maneater?
cheesy awesomeness!
Just because these songs are considered the worst #1's that doesn't mean they're bad songs. They're dated to be sure but many of them are quality tunes.
My God... some of the best songs of the last century are in here o.o
Good job overall but some of these should NOT be on here. Genesis is AWESOME and they are #1. GRRR
on the ball kid perfectly right top listing, all and i mean crap songs.
Ok. Maybe it's just me, but... Bobby McFerrin? The man is an incredible vocalist and vocal instrumentalist. And Don't Worry, Be Happy was a joke. I mean... he wrote it as a joke. The fact that Robin Williams was involved in the making of the video should prove that. It was a fun little ditty.
get your facts right bon jovi has never done a bag song bon jovi rocks
Bon Jovi...
You're just trolling us, aren't you?
You forgot True from Spandau Ballet
#1. - Spandau Ballet - True
#2. - System - Don't Disturb This Groove
#3. - Kajagoogoo - Too Shy ( Hey Girl Move A Little Closer )
#4. - New Kids On The Block - ( Every Single They Released )
#5. - Stars On 45 - Medley
#6. - Boz Scaggz - Jojo
#7. - Frank & Moon Zappa - Valleygirl
#8. - Yarbrough & People's - Don't Stop The Music
#9. - Luther Vandross - She Won't Talk To me
#10. - Patty Austin & James Ingram - Baby Come To me
I don't know mate, I know a thing or two about music and this chart of yours does not seem right. I can prove it, of course - http://www.last.fm/user/ReAlign2 . I am just 21 years old but I have learned to listen all kind of music - 80's, 90's, 70's, even the crap that has been made today and I just have to say something to people like you who give rush general opinions - open your mind a bit. I hate, of course, Starship and Prince, but to put Genesis, Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams (I haven't even read the whole list) on such a list - you can not be sane! P.S. Sorry for the rude language!
Thanks for the list even though you're probably tired of seeing new comments after 3 years haha. What's so revealing is the difference between the mainstream pop songs and the more underground stuff going on like Meat Puppets, Smiths, the Fall, Cowboy Junkies and Sonic Youth. The 80s also had good dance music like New Order and Public Image Lmtd. Rap was still maturing but at a fast pace as someone already mentioned. Hell, even the underground metal like Slayer and Celtic Frost was worlds better than freaking Poison and Cinderella lol. You just gotta take the good with the bad in every decade.
Im a Producer/DJ and who ever made this list should be shoot because there are alot of song in this list that were great hits and we still rock and we still make remixes of it, you should learn music before posting this...v
i have to post again im going through the list You shouldn't be a DJ or anything you hate on all the good music and is people like you that give us producers remixer dj bad name i have never seen any of your stuff on youtube or anywhere so i dont know were your coming out liek you are big shot. You can manage and record store that dont mean shit lol... dude you might old but for sure DUMB. go back to mucis school 101 if u need help hit me up I do have 1 hits remixes and beats on beatport ratedh.net getmyremix.com and more look me up and learn ,,,
I think the author is confusing "100 #1 songs from the 1980's which I don't care for" with "100 Worst #1 Songs of the 1980's"
This is the musical equivalent of some stat nerd's "100 Worst Minor League Baseball Stadiums" post on bleacherreport.com
I have to say, Satisfied by Richard Marx is 80's cheese in all its glory and I bump it regularly. No shame.
MANIAC - michael sembello, WTF this is a classic.
it's funny how the number 1 songs of the 80s are the songs from the decade that never get played on classic hit radio stations anymore. there are only a few on this list that i still hear on commercial radio, along with the great new wave and hair band songs of the 80s that still do get commercial radio airplay. i'm actually surprised that a lot of these were number 1 hits. i mean seriously, MJ's embarrassingly bad Dirty Diana got to number 1?
i also find it interesting how different pop music was in the early-early 80s (before new wave artists hit it big on the pop charts) when compared to the late 80s. from about '80 to '82, soft adult contemporary artists like Barbara Streisand, Olivia Newton-John, Kenny Rogers and forgotten leftovers from the 70s like KC and the Sunshine Band and Captain and Tenille could actually still score number 1 pop hits. but by the late 80s, it was all about hair bands and slick electronic and synthesized pop tracks from new young artists like Bobby Brown, Debbie Gibson, Rick Astley, Milli Vanilli, and New Kids on the Block scoring number 1 hits.
QUEEN didn't make the list either because they didn't have number ones of the 80's or Queen had good music of the 80's Under Pressure, and Another one bites the Dust are great 80's QUEEN songs.
Well, I have to agree with 99% of your choices, some pretty flaccid stuff - BUT - I just heard WILD WILD WEST - by the Escape Club recently and it surprised me at how really good that song was! Even included some decent rappish lyrics and the beat keeps chuggin'. The '80s were the last bit of fun (like the '60s) when everyone got to express themselves openly and songs like these kinda made the '80s what they were: kitschy, colorful, overblown, but most of all fun and unfortunately the last era of innocence.

I have to confess that I like some of these songs. I will go and hide my shame now.
