The 450 Best Songs of the 70's
96THE FUNKTUAL 500 AWAITS YOUR INTERGALACTIC OPINION
This is The Funktual 450
aka~~~~ A list of the Intergalactic Library's greatest human songs of the 1970s! They are in order of their popularity throughout the universe.
While most things from Earth and it's ape-beings are openly mocked throughout the universe, it is also protected and cherished....even pitied. It is on the Endangered Species list and thusly not allowed to be destroyed, if, for no other reason, than to preserve the beautiful music these monkey-men could once play.
** My assignment is to find 50 more songs for each decade starting with the 1970s thereby expanding them to what will eventually become .....
The Funktual 500
The 50 New Songs chosen by you shall be heretofore transmitted throughout the neighboring 17 galaxies. Beings much more sophisticated than you await your humble opinions. Seize This Day Humans.....please...while there's still time.

fREAKING COOL. tHANKS.
some of those songs are still being played on the radio, and i love listening to the songs opf 70s
As #255 rattles in my brain, can someone tell me how Diana Ross managed to excape from this list? There must be something she did worthy of this 70's list.
Cool list, but personally, my first ten when be a little different.
DJ the diversity of this list Is epic and there are so many excellent tunes on It . I probabaly know the word to most If not all these songs . Nice job Bro !
I'm not sure if I missed it but is "Go All The Way" by The Raspberries NOT on this list? If it isn't, that's a shame.
Great list, but so much is left out; there was far more music deserving on this list
How did Midnight Train to Georgia not make the top 100?
midnight to georgia needs spell check lol x
Ob la di, Ob la da isn't from the 70s, its from 1968!
I am very much surprised that apart from Hotel calafornia, no other Eagle song finds the list. Many of thier songs were and are still being heard on Radio all over the world, than most of the songs listed. I think this huge list needs more introspection.
Awesome list - keep on truckin'!
Ever heard of the Eagles?
Great list of 70s songs.
There Must Be Many More Of The 70's Greats, Where Have They Gone To, I Wonder? But This 450's Are Something We Will Remember For A Long Long Time To Go By.....
The doors should be in it more!
It's hit or miss for me. Some of the time it looks like you're just taking the obvious "hit" track from the artist or album, when I think there are better album tracks available. Sometimes I totally agree with the choice: Rapper's Delight, Bob Marley, Over the Hills and Far Away, Night Moves, The Cars!
My Ramones picks: Rockaway Beach, Sheena Is A Punk Rocker, but no Clash AT ALL? Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London? I don't really even know his work that well, but I feel like that was his sell-out to get paid song.
I just expected more depth after reading your tear on the Rolling Stone 500 albums article, and what you'd have included. Over all though, a pretty good list, just puzzling at times.
P.S. You basically have the "Dazed and Confused" soundtrack on here, which is awesome.
Mad cool must have taken you hours
The title of #272 is "Young Lust" instead of "Dirty Woman."
Love the list, not going to berate you for songs that should or should not be on it as all lists like this are open to interpretation. It's lists like yours that give me ideas for songs to DL that I don't have yet.
Where's Jethro Tull (best song is Thick as a Brick), Genesis (best song Firth of Fifth) or George Harrison (best song Art of Dying).
Also:
The Beatles' best song in the 70's is I Me Mine (or Across The Universe (don't know if that counts as the 70's)).
Led Zeppelin's best song ever is Kashmir.
Wings' best song is Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five.
Pink Floyd's best song is probably Time.
Blondie's No Imagination should have been on your list too.
All this is just my opinion though.
-----------------------------
Some mistakes:
Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da is from the 60's.
Live and Let Die is by the Wings, not McCartney.
And Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights?
Does anyone remember a song with the words which go something like this..........I've got the recital vital blues Tchaikovsky and his blue suede shoes. Thats all we can recall. Heard it lots on a friends cassette in their car goin to work around 1974 1975 1976. Please help its driving us insane
To Mitch: You were looking for this song which has been driving you all insane. Well I cured your insanity. It is by Neil Innes - Re-cycled Vinyl Blues. Here is a link to youtube for the song. enjoy, ~Don
I Love the jackson 5 up to the Bees gees also Donna summer and wild cherry and bruce Springsteen and best of the 70's and rockin 70's and up to ABBA and i am fan of 70's movies and t.v shows like saturday night fever and star wars episode 4 a new hope grease and that 70's show and saturday night live to and also had been from the time my mom and my dad when they were teenagers in the 70's by the time of the 80's is around the time of 1987 is the year of when I was born that's year when my brother michael jackson did the bad album .
I know I am late; but can't leave this unmentioned..I can't believe there is NO song on this list by The Band!! I know most of their better songs were written and recorded in the '60s; but they were touring and playing these songs until 1976. "Up On Cripple Creek" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" came out on their brown album in '69; but hit the radio in '69 and '70. In '75 they did "Ophelia" and "Acadian Driftwood". The Band's contributions to the history of Classic Rock is major...A SHAME they were ignored!
I guess some people didn't read the title. Songs of the 70's. Thanks for the listing. Very good job indeed.
creo que es una buena lista, pero no tienes ningún tema de electric light orchestra ... Telephone line, Mr.Blue sky, last train to london.. Etc.., también aporto con gerry rafferty con right down the line y rita coolidge con we're all alone.
Back in the 70's there were several songs where there were questions asked in the song and then a line from another popular song was inserted as the answer. Does anyone remember these songs and what they were called?
I can't believe .38 Special Did not make this list?! They rock! One of the best rock & roll bands of all time for sure!
Sympathy For The Devil is from 1968, not the '70's.
Where are the clash?!
Great job all the way, thank you for sharing.
I feel honored to give you a music recommendation funktual! I'm assuming you haven't heard Television's Marquee Moon because if you had it would have to have a song or two on this list! For reference, Television is a huge influence on one of your (and my) favorite modern bands, The Strokes. Marquee Moon is just an awesome awesome album with a lot of great tracks.
By the way I just left you a few other comments under Tom and then I remembered I had made an account here! Still not sure what to hub about but I love reading yours and watching your videos!
there are ALOT of great songs on here, but you left out an entire ERA: disco. -not that im a huge disco fan, but the BeeGees had hit after hit after hit... How deep Is Your Love was an ENOURMOUS song! Tragedy, Night Fever, Love You Inside out...
im also a huge fan of Frank Zappa, and id have to add Dinah Mo Hum to the list. Dont Eat the Yellow Snow...
george Harrison - Give Me Love
Dude I just purchased 12 songs from Amazon because of you!!
wow! crazy band names and song titles quite unique compare to the decade of 80s 90s and year 2000.
Nice but um, what's dirty woman by pink Floyd? I'm a big Floyd fan and I'm 99% sure that's not a song. Maybe young lust, so look into it
A lot of songs missing Howzat by Sherbet
Sky High by Jigsaw
Hold On by Ian Gomm
What about "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas?
There are a ton of Elton John songs missing
There But For The Grace Of God by Machine
Patrice Rushen also had Forget Me Nots
The whole disco scene doesn't exist here
Where is Andy Gibb?
Blondie Rapture.
Now to add a song that I remember from a countdown when I was a kid. The countdown was in '76 so I am not sure of the year it went "Got to get up to the get down feeling, go to get up and get it on." I thought I imagined until it came om in a restaurant. So if anyone knows it please let me know. It has been driving me nuts since the early 80's
OSMOSIS, 'She didn't even remember my name' would have to get a mention
stairway to heaven is number 85? i think it should be a bit higher
Bohemian Rhapsody #63????... Stairway To Heaven at #85??????.... You just had your brain burning through the headphones!!!... Some songs are from the 60's.. and by the way it seems that you not really know the 70's...
Just wanted to say a big thanks for the time you did with the listing as it is everyones taste is different and it would take thousands of titles to really make up a killer list for the 70's group. I see 100's of titles that could have been placed but; a nice list anyway. Keep on ROCKING!!!
weres kate bush :( she was the best of the 70s and 80s
Where's KISS at on the list???
Who sang the song and what is the title? It has a line that goes "once upon a time I drank a little wine, was as happy as could be. Now I'm just like a cat on a hot tin roof baby what do you think you're doing to me."
Stairway
I really think that that list should have only classic rock music of solid solid rock band that list is not the classic rock that we want
it's an not bad
Hey there was a song I heard it one time back in 75 allways wondered who sang it. the lyrics that I remember go like this (one for the money two for the show three for the lady on the radio and four for the world you,ll never know you'll never know if only there was a better way to go) well if you or any of your fans know it or find it will forever appr. and thanks just the same the seventys rocked and the music always will
Good Job ! I have been having a tough time finding someone to post a listing of the 70's music . Eventhough some might be missing still like it.
Thank you
@g-bera That song is called Two for the show by Trooper
THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN, Thin Lizzy.
can anyone help me,
i am looking for an old song for my father, he has it on his caset, and we only need to know, who is the singer and the name of the song!!
it starts with:
how can i live, if you are going to leave me, i surly cry, without you.....
A lot of you people commenting on this list can't seem to grasp the concept that this is ONE PERSON'S OPINION on what the greatest songs of the 70's are. Just because YOUR favorite songs didn't make the list doesn't mean you have to get all bent out of shape over it.
ob la di ob la da is 68 off the white album, not 70's. Besides the white album mistakes, accurate and great list
Anyway... do you need an intro and outro in a song?or could it be just instrumental and then start sing?
ummmm freebird?????
Black betty by Ram Jma would be in my top 10
"Sympathy for the devil" is not a 70s song, it was recorded by The Rolling Stones in 1968
and "Ramble on" (Led Zeppelin) is from 1969.
and "Ob la di ob la da" was recorded on The Beatles' White Album (1968).
disco ruled the 70s everything else was not in the same league
Way too much R&B, hard rock, etc. Not enough folk and soft rock. Study something melodic called major key tonality at Pandora.com. It's reason why 70s was best decade for music.
WHAT ABOUT??? WHAT ABOUT??? This is obviously their own perspective on what they feel is the best, quite clearly passionate as to have spent so much time writing this out...... if you dont like it, take the time out to write your own list out and see what other people think of yours... i'm sure they'll still have something to add.
what is that song that goes:
sa bla boom wa..... ooeeoooo
????
Please guys I'm desperate
Voting this up.
Great list of 70s songs. The 70s era had a lot of different genres of hits.
There was a song in '78 or,'79, I can't remember the song or artist, but some of the lyrics are ' oh,... yeah,.... spendin' the night together'. I'm desperate. Who sang that? Please help Me!
Jon I think you might mean "Sharing the Night Together" by Dr. Hook, 1978.
ev
Where are Tiny Dancer, Yor song, Bennie and the jets, Crocdile rock, Daniel, candle in the wind? I can´t believe that there are just two Elton John ´s songs there!! This is wrong.
what about Darts? Or did i miss it?
cant believe that STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY are placed too low on the list. they are even considered as one of the best songs OF ALL TIME.
The eagles blew and spewed some of the slickest slimyest songs this side of Wilson phillips.
That's why they don't appear here much.
That alone makes this list by definition fairly accurate.
Mitch...if you get this great! The song you are looking for is Neil Innes - Recyled Vinyl Blues.
Hope you get this!
i remember this one song from the 70s when i was a kid.
all i can remember was a part of the lyrics ,
we will get you down, we will get you down, we will get you home.we will get you home.
we will get you down down down , we will get you home..
anyone know the name ??? thanks
I love lists like these - I would add Time Passages or Song on the Radio by Al Stewart = an underrated artist was Dancin' in the Moonlight or Midnight at the Oasis in there? Those are some great lat enight listening tunes
does anyone no... a song from the 70's that goes like..
ola ola ola aye rolly rolly chickabunga
you never even called me by my name~
Seem a couple of old tunes from the early 70's that still have traction with the older crowd are Dixie Chicken and Brown Eyed Girl.
But I could have missed them.
Dixie Chicken is still played all over the south and with Van Morrison being inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, you would have thought he would have been given a spot?
Cya
PART of the 70's was still great music. The middle to latter part got away from traditional rock/folk/hillbilly roadhouse music.
PART of the 60's (64-69) were in my opinion the greatest formative years for music. The 3 piece garage bands that became national treasures in just a few years after stepping on stage will never be replaced and the 3 piece garage bands all but do not exist any longer.
Just imagine all that music coming from 3 people?!
Cream
ZZ Top
SRV
and on and on.
They are no more.
They were magicians, not just musicians and artists. They were magicians.
Cya
Stevie Wonder #1? No Rush in the list? Jackson 5, ABC-That song isn't in the top 45,000.
Ob-la-di Ob-la-da was re released as a single in 1976
Where's Lou Rawls - YOU'LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LOVE LIKE MINE?
Could someone please explain to me why no Ted Nugent and no LYNYRD FREAKIN SKYNYRD FREE BIRD?!?!?! awesome mix though..
The Beatles weren't recording music in the 70's. Let it Be was released May of '70, but was recorded in '69.
Iron Man by Black Sabbath and Hopelessly Devoted to You by Olivia Newton-John, are two of the greatest and most popular songs of all time, and they're not even in the list!!!! Both two should've been in the top 10!
Btw where's the Queen's We Will Rock You, Killer Queen, We Are the Champions?? Man, this list sucks. Sorry..
Hi!!! Sorry to correct you, but Fleetwood Mac's "Gypsy",(#359), was not released until 1982...It is a great song though, and should be included in your 80's list!! Take care everyone!!:)
wheres shattered?
Niel Sedaka, Nigel Olsson, Cliff Richard
....Climax Blues Band, Little River Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Ambrosia, Bread, Exile, Todd Rundgren, Carpenters, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, April Wine, Ace, Firefall, Orleans, Robbie Dupree. The list goes on. Does anyone else remember these?
Thanks for a great list, i have listened to these songs over and over again and they literally never get old! and No.1 is definatly well deserved.
70's was the best time for music!
This list is not great. There were so many other music groups whose music was heard on the radio and it is not listed here. No Eagles, carpenters, beegees,Chicago etc. Crap list you have come out with. Anybody who says that the sons of Eagles are slimest and not good does not know music. PERIOD.
Chicago, Kansas, and The Quesadillas Who were more dof the radioominating the many if these songs listed. What's up with that?
i doubt the list is in order by popularity because everyone knows stairway to heaven would be number 1. But where is Freebird?? Definately in the top 10 if not top 5 best rock songs of the 70s
My mum has downloaded all these songs!!! She is crazy inlove with them
Someone mentioned Little River Band. Definitely should have been on this list for the song Reminiscing - released in 1978.
:::"Reminiscing", written by Goble, was recognised by BMI as one of the most frequently played songs in the history of American radio, with more than four million plays to its credit.::::
If you're going to expand this list to 500, maybe you could include'Still the Same' by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band,Peter Frampton's 'Show Me the Way, 'Beth' by Kiss and any number of releases by Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love, We Are the Champions). While we might not agree with all of your picks, I respect the attempt because, as we know, the seventies was an awesome decade for music! *If I've listed songs that appeared on your list, forgive me...my eyesight isn't what it used to be, lol!
Wings had Admiral Halsey/Uncle Albert, Ringo Starr with It don't Come Easy, Harrison with My Sweet Lord. Then Matthew's Southern Comfort with their version of Woodstock. Carole King It's Too Late, America Sister Golden Hair, It was the absolute best time for Music. Look at all the stuff that is done on American Idol that brings down the roof -- It is always from the 70's or early 80's (Just skip the disco era....)
I would like to submit one ... how about Strawberry Letter 22
hey guys im sorry but i would like an information can enybody tel me what is the name of a rock song that the lyrics say something about God and the Devil gambling over a soul i really need it but i dont remember the name nor the name of the band and i cant find it
Hi macraoni,
I think chris de burg sung that song. It has something to do with a train with god
And the devil playing cards for peoples souls .?
excuse me but why michael jackson ans the jackson 5 are so low???!!!JESUS CHRIST!!!:@
i looked up list of 70s songs and it pulled up everyone of the bands most of you talked about in your post its pretty cool list some songs i have not herd in forever i also love songs from the 70's i noticed thay dont have kiss listed here either and thay where a big hit back then also so check out the other site. just do a search and say list of 70s songs and it will come right up for you to look at. :)you wont be disapointed folks. its all there.
Please please please.
I'm looking for a song which was on the South African Top 20 on Sprinbok Radio with David Gresham. The song is - A shoulder to cry on, original artist, Denise Freeman. The lyrics are as follows: I'm just a shoulder to cry on, when someone breaks your heart, a pillow to weap on when all your dreams depart, why can't you love me or leave and find somebody new .......
Please, I always arrange concerts when I was in primary school, and then I sang this song over and over. It is on Springbok Hit Parade Vol 8. the vinyl records.
You've got blinded by the light by manfred mans earth band in there twice.
No way can you include "A Horse With No Name," which is the worst song of the 70s that didn't involve disco, dead girls, or muskrats (BTW, America actually recorded "Muskrat Love" first) and omit "Sister Golden Hair." I would also highly recommend the inclusion of "We Just Disagree" by Dave Mason.
"The Ballad of John & Yoko" was 1969, so it's disqualified. Thumbs up for including "Up the Junction" by Squeeze.
Loved looking through the list.

passing through with a thumbs up :)
