The 450 Best Songs of the 80's
87
From ABC to ZZ TOP
This is The Funktual 450
aka~~~~ A list of the Intergalactic Library's greatest human songs of the 1980s! They are in order of their popularity throughout the universe.
While most things from Earth and it's ape-beings are openly mocked throughout the universe, it is also protected and cherished....even pitied. It is on the Endangered Species list and thusly not allowed to be destroyed, if, for no other reason, than to preserve the beautiful music these monkey-men used to be able to play.
** My assignment is to find 50 more songs for each decade starting with the 1980s thereby expanding them to what will eventually become .....
The Funktual 500
The 50 New Songs chosen by you shall be heretofore transmitted throughout the neighboring 17 galaxies. Beings much more sophisticated than you await your humble opinions. Seize This Day Humans.....please...while their is still time.

Great list! I had forgotten a lot of these.
The is the greatest top 450 songs of the eighties list post on hubpages today!!!
This is great!!! Where do you come up with this stuff?
Question: i hope it's not in any particular order. I wouldn't disagree with a U2 song in the #1 spot, just no that one.
AWESOME! Thanks for sending me this ;) I'm going through now to add it to my iTunes list.
Tiff ;) <---former Crue and VH DLR era fan, but lover of pop, rap, and country, too!
Wow, 450! I'm in awe. The 80's are probably my patchiest decade, because my parents were too old to listen to 80's artists and I was too young, but I've been exploring them more lately and this list will be a huge help!
I got to admitt this is a very nice and big list, and probably we`re all missing songs like outfield, or simple minds, or so many others, but you like funk and soul...your videos talk 'bout themselves! congrats i also must admitt that you gave me quite some answers with them!!!, but what about:" listen up y'all, this rhythms a mamma...hit it! Tribute (right on) by the pasadenas! thats a must in your (our) list!
Where's THRILLER? You've gotta be kidding me.
I Feel For You - Chaka Khan
Top 10, easy.
wow this last is great. only thing is i think u should have put under pressure way higher up, at least in the top 50. that songs just perfectly put together it gives me chills every time i listen to it.
by the way, i've been wondering, how many songs do you own, cuz i've been looking at a lot of your lists and videos and stuff and it seems like you must have millions of songs. do you own all the ones you mention here?
haha yea of course i know that, but do u know specifically how many songs you own
no dead kennedys
Mickey - Toni Basil
Where it´s Iron Maiden (the number of the beast, Run to the hills), Megadeth (Peace sells) and many heavy metal songs?
gold by spandau ballet and living on the ceiling by blacmange
Shake the desiese Depeche Mode
or Leave in Silence
I have a song that I'm trying to findout who sings it? The corus line says " Forever, Forever, Forever, Foreverrrrr."
The begining line goes, 1 here we go again, 2 too good too be friends, Together, Forever... If you can send me the artists if you know it? I'm at funik44@yahoo.com
Thanks Dj Time Machine
I'll pick "When Doves Cry," by Prince, the Britney Spears of funk. Just kidding. Later!
Sunglasses At Night - Coery hart
Oh, what a great list!
452. Gypsy Road - Cinderella
:)
queen is the biggest band ever
This list is good but i think its a bit sided towards Michael Jackson and The Police especially. But I think that Careless Whisper, Living On A Prayer and Don't Stop Believing should be in at least the Top 100
why the hell didn't broken wings get added on her
Wow first off the list blows the VH1 top 100 picks out of the water
But I think that The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News deserves a spot on here
this.... SUCKS!!!! bon jovi, ac/dc, aerosmith, guns n roses
van halen and that hard rock bands are 202040052050 times
better than this horible list
433 -rock me amadeus - falco
WTF!! This should be like, two hundred spots up!
No EDDIE MONEY?
Hey Welcome to the Jungle is a great song, but Honestly I was raised on Moonglows - The Ten Commandments of Love,The Lion Sleeps tonight and Whip Out. Then elevated to Acid Rock Moody Blues and Pink Floyd. So I'm I a Universal Sea Horse surfing music as I drift through different time warps.

where's roxette Listen to your heart ?
remove the ballad of peter pumpkinhead - XTC that is a 1990s song
owner of a lonely heart is in twice
What on earth happened to Glass Tiger and Gowan?
At least Clarence Carter made it haha. Awesome!!
You have a very recommendable list here, however I can see a few important omissions altogether
You do have
Modern Talking
Kylie Minogue
Iron Maiden
Alison Moyet
Marillion
No
Kraftwerk?
The Cure?
Ultravox
Roxy Music
Aztec Camera
Tangerine Dream
Jethro Tull
China Crisis
and the omission Of Tears for fears is an absolute surprise..
and if Alan parsons Project's Eye In the Sky is no 446 on the list I cannot be too sure.
If I audit this list i may be able to detect a few mo0re relevant bands which have been overlooked and this list is too biased towards a few artists like u2, prince, Bruce Springsteen etc but all in all it is a good list and has great songs.
Superb hub, I couldn't agree more with your choice of U2 having the song of the 80's though my favorite U2 song of the era was Bad, but then again it is hard to argue against such a classic as Where The Streets Have No Name.
Keep me holding on, kim wilde
amazing song im 16 and i love the 80s music :)
302 and 273 are both : owner of a lonely heart- yes
Is Voices Carry(Til Tuesday)on there? I don't think I saw it. How about Electric Blue by Icehouse and Black and Blue by Haywire?
Good songs.
Great list!
Thanks for the list! I needed to find some songs from the 80's to uhhh, legally download and your site was very helpful!
Could'nt find it on the list, tho it may be there...Your Love - The Outfeild????!
No Cyndi Lauper here either? Right Track Wrong Train, All Through The Night and/or Time After Time deserves to be here.
Anything from Off the Wall would be the '79.
...no man in the mirror or smooth criminal???
:(
no Cyndi Lauper?
Relax - Frankie goes to Hollywood
I loved the list!
But...
Where is Billy Ocean and his song Caribbean Queen, which is one of the best from the 80's???
This list seems too biased. "Where the Streets Have No Names" beats "Billie Jean"? I don't think so.
paid in full (coldcut remix) - eric b. & rakim
top billin - audio two
I can't take any list seriously with songs like this on it as a best of anything list
just as examples of why this list is just plain sh^^^
those songs are just embarassing.
like most of us that grew up in the eighties I listened to everything from country to heavy metal, rap, ska, pop, disco, you name.
But if the songs a turd its a turd. Putting the label eighties song at the end of it doesn't polish it up or excuse it.
I will give you credit for having a list of songs and groups most people hadnt thought of in 20 to 30 years and big checkmarks for putting living color on there.
They were legit rockers, but some of your choices make me cringe.
maybe you should seriously consider turning this into the biggest list of eighties bands, one-hit wonders or music and just forget about making it a best of list.
You must seriously love the eighties to have a list like this though.
good list, it's just too bad you can't get all of 'em on here. electric blue by icehouse and come back and stay - by paul young - just to mention a few...
how about Rod Stewarts Young Turks
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You up 1987
The Bottom Line - Big Audio Dynamite
Straight From the Heart and Heaven by Bryan Adams
I Remember You by Skid Row
Right Here Waiting and Endless Summer Nights by Richard Marx
Waiting for a star to fall by Boy meets girl
Whitney Houston has tons of songs that are not listed! Like How Will I Know and Where do Broken Hearts Go
Otherwise, you have a pretty good list!
What u never heard of the Eagles?? Hotel California, Take it easy, Lyin'eyes...Damn. Get it together Dude.
Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes (1981) was the second biggest hit in America in the 80's decade. 9 weeks at no. 1. Brilliant tune and clever lyrics. I'm surprised its so low down the list.
no paul abdul staight up
Pat Benatar--Love is a Battlefield
Animotion--Obsession
Kate Bush--Running Up That Hill
The Outfield--Your Love
The Pretenders--Don't Get Me Wrong

I can never find this song on google for obvious reasons as the only lyrics i can remember are the chorus, and even they are bizarre - but i remember it being a decent tune! SOMEBODY MUST KNOW IT please!!!!!!! (Please bear in mind the ''ooh de la'' may have been something else entirely although this is what i remember it sounding like as a little kid in 80's)
chorus went something like below .......
oooh de la
oooh de la
oooh de la
oooh de la
oooh de la
oooh de la heyy
oooh de la
oooh de la
oooh de la
oooh de la
oooh de la U.S.A.
DJ Funktual use one of mine as 452 =D
This list is awesome, thank you for putting this together, even though some songs were not on there, it's the most comprehensive list I've found online. You rock!
whack list
..and The Stranglers - Golden Brown
Livin On A Prayer Bon Jovi VH1's #1 Song of the 80's
Kissing the Pink - One step
the tubes- she's a beauty one hit wonder best song ever
heartbeat city by the cars (1984)
Sly Fox - Let's go all the way
How can u leave this song of an 80's list?
No mention of Kiss? I also loved Far From Over by Frank Stallone. How did that end up with Tony Manero instead of Rocky Balboa though?
this is the same sort of stuff critics like rolling stone and blender, pitchfork have on their lists, seems kind of generic, I like all the one hit wonders and non-mainstream choices though, I gotta hear the lesser-known stuff sometime.
I can not believe this list and VH1 left these two songs out... Everyone knows them, and they were 2 of the biggest songs of the 80's anyone who lived then would agree.
Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters 1984
Kenny Loggins - Highway to the Dangerzone 1986
Get your heads in the game
might as well add
Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F
Glenn Frey - The Heat is On
Irene Cara - What a Feeling
J. Geils Band - Centerfold
The Bangles - Walk Like an Egyptian
ZZ Top - Legs
Huey Lewis and the News - Power of Love
This list needs a little work
A lot of stuff on here i don't like, but hey, I hate pop music in general and it's a big list, but there are some great tunes on here.
Still, the top 15 should have just been all the songs from Paul's Boutique in my opinion :)
And if someone mentions centrefold by j. geils band again i'm going to fucking scream, that song is a representation of everything that was wrong with 80's music. Fuck i hate that song.
My there is a lot of hatin' going on here :) Truly these lists are just out there as a matter of one's opinion. I agree there are songs that should be on the list and sure as hell some that should be removed. There aren't enough alternative ones on the list. Give this one a listen DJ Funtual World Destruction by Time Zone. Awesome song and shit twist it turn it and it becomes relevant all over again today! Anyway props for thinking of the list! Maybe we don't all see eye to eye but it's nice to see the music lovers are out there and passin' it on.....
BTW dude you got some of these listed in the wrong catagory some are from the early 1990's no harm no foul. Just do some fact checking there. We all do make mistakes.
Hey! I love this list! I was looking for a list of the best music from when I was a little kid. You have alot of stuff on their I remember dancing to. This is alot of work, I'm glad I didn't have to do it. So thanks.
I LOOKED AT THE LIST, WHERE IS THE 80'S PUNK BAND THE ALARM, THEY SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE LIST,
NOT ONLY FOR THERE MUSIC, BUT FOR THE RESPECT MIKE THE LEAD SINGER HAS FOR HIS FANS, AND PLUS ALL THE FUNDRAISING HE HAS HELPED DO, FOR CANCER SUPPORT CENTRES AROUND THE WORLD, MIKE HAS LUKEEMIA, ITS A CANCER THAT HE CAN LIVE WITH BUT THERE IS NO CURE, SO THANK GOD FOR MIKE AND THE ALARM
Great list Funk, I know it's not easy compiling lists like this and yes there are some omissions for me personally but I am sure they would be in a top 500 or top 1000...thank you for the time and effort for putting this all together, haters can eat a fat d--k.

I'm searching for a song. And in the song the refrain are like some kinda bells from a clocktower. Can you help me to find it. And the singer is a women. She got a bit of weird voices. Thx
Broken Wings from Mister Misster.
one song from metallica and nothing from NWA? The only two artists to go platinum with virtually zero radio airplay?
Europe- The Final Countdown
What happened with some of The Cars' songs?
Ship of fools (#22) is a song by Scorpions. Unless that is a completely different song..
Not even one SimpleMinds song?
Someone Somewhere In Summertime, Promised You A Miracle, Waterfront, Alive & Kicking and even Don't You Forget About Me would be great candidates in my opinion.
Pixies-Monkey Gone To Heaven
Definitely needs to be more def leppard
I didn't go through the whole list, but seem to be dominated by English... since the universe probably doesn't speak English any more than Apache or Swahili,.. how about some other cultures represented.
Try listening to Perro Andaluz by Serú Girán for example (1980)
Obsession was performed by "Animotion." Not animation.
i'm 57 and been collecting since i was 5.the 80's was overall the best decade for music, hair and fashion and culture in general.i could list reasons why but i won't.instead i'll say that this list is awesome, however, like other posters here have mentioned, there are some songs missing.but that's natural.it would take a lifetime to add every decent song from the 80's..for example, lene lovich's "lucky number"...songs one wouldn't think of right off the bat.but hey, this is awsome list anyway.i was particularly picky in the 80's.i was into the new wave bands in particular(pet shop boys, the cars, falco)even though i loved heart and the bangles and the pop sound as well.i have been collecting music videos of the 80's for forever now,it seems.they're becoming more difficult to find however.i recently bought(from amazon) a 12 dvd set of 80's music videos, there's 31 on each dvd(373 music videos total).i have other sets also.my audio cd's number in the high thousands/evry kind possible.50's to current, including tons from the 80's./again,i like your list./awesome/i miss tremendously the 80's culture and lifestyle and fashions
I think your list rocks,dude!...It has alot of the songs I was searching for and ones I had forgotten..Dont let the naysayers bother you..of course some songs are not on here..hard to think of every one of the 80s hits..and everyones taste are different, hence the word individual,people..just shut up and enjoy the music and the memories, must you complain about every single thing??..Peace~~~~

I see these lists compiled all the time. And each time the one band that gets disrespected the most is Culture Club. I remember the 80's and from the moment i heard "Do you really want to hurt me" and their grammy for best new artist plus the millions ot albums they sold. Which I know most of you own. Aside from the gay drama, give these guys the respect they deserve!!!!!!
Can I download your list of songs for the 1980's for free?
Majors and Generals - XTC
I Eat Cannibals - Toto Coelo?
Both Happy Birthday and I Could Be Happy by Altered Images!
By the way - this list is really great. As I read it, some of the songs take me back to late summer nights (early summer mornings?) of 1983 - the year I graduated high school. I had the earphones on, watching MTV, listening to the audio from the VCR into the stereo set and the TV volume off! Thanks for the "awesome" flashback!
The list of 450 songs of the 80's is really the greatest work of your minds, please kindly let me have all those songs in cds or mp3s, how much will it cost me?
no Nu Shooz "i can't wait?" and i thought we were kindred spirits.

Peter Gabrial - In your eyes.
how is this not listed yet.
I can't believe Tom Petty's Free Fallin didn't make the list, that song is a classic.
Also Metallica should have more representation. Their earlier stuff may have not charted well, but those albums still sell well through today.
Dokken & Queensryche should also be included.
They got a collection of queen songs on this list another one bites the dust and flash
Queen another one bites the dust and queen under pressure should have been number 2 and another one bites the dust should have been number 1.
I love queen flash, another one bites the dust, crazy little thing called love and under pressure all of these songs made tqhis 80's list freddie mercury and queen were totally rad 80's artists.
can anyone help me im trying to remember a song the music video always used to be on kerrang all i remember was they looked quite cyber Japanese wore bright colors dressed like super heroes robbing a bank and singing on a roof top random i know but i loved it and cant for the life of me think what it was, the girl singing had blue hair and skin tight blue outfit
How sad you've never heard of Prefab Sprout. To many music lovers they're considered amongst the best songwriters of the 80s and beyond.
Love QUEEN ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST.
This is gonna be a pain but I'd appreciate the help I'm looking for an original version of a song a man called wilbur is singing on a programme called the worst place in the world to be a dustman pt 1 he's on stage singing it in his band I would sooo appreciate some one naming theat bloody song plleeeease p.s I love all the songs and comment thanku

Billy jean should be number one.
Queen under pressure should be number one queen I love
how about - 'you are all I need" by Motley Crue????
Queen radio ga ga should be on here great thing another one bites the dust made the list
I suggest including on your list "Camouflage" and "Drive She Said" by Stan Ridgway. He made these about 3 or 4 years after leaving Wall of Voodoo. The first tells about a soldier fighting in the Vietnam War, and the second is about a cab driver who is forced at gunpoint to help a bank robber escape. It is a real shame that Ridgway is so underrated--he is an amazing songwriter!
I need help finding a song or singer from 80's or early 90's and it goes something like this "want to go where the boys are" or "want to be where the boys are" please help if u can.
Fool in the Rain was 1979. It was on the In Through the Out Door album.
I LOVE IT BECUSE I LOVE IT
Pretty good list. I'm glad you left out the song Footloose I hate that song.
There is nothing from Joy Division ?
This work is great! Thanks!
I'm looking for a very cool song, the only i can remember is the video clip. It is in a train with open doors, and you see a boy beating a drum, and also a woman, and sometimes we see the singer. The train is on the route, and the scenery seem's to be sort of desert. like the old trains in the western movies...
Can anybody remember the name of this song or the artist????
please can you seriously consider adding eurythmics, culture club, joy division and kate bush please! (obvious tunes :P ) other than that absolutely fantastic and very handy for insperation at my finger tips for what i need to still add to my ipod! I'm 16 so it's hard to recall names from memory ;)
Great list.
Would be nice to see the top 200 hard rock ballads of the 80's
I'm sure i will find a track that i probably forget. And the main reason, it's not in my collection.
Been trying for the longest while to find a song by the name ; Keep on running (its performed by a hard rock band, either from the 70's or 80's)Pls, somebody must know it.
There;s a line that goes..You better keep on running, don't stop running
Can anyone remember the name of a song where the music video was a bunch of models walking up and down a cat walk??
That's the best list I've seen but I would take anything by Fogerty out, his solo stuff stinks like a sack full of assholes. Turning Japanese is horrific too, but the rest are good!
Here is one that needs to be considered, a great song from 1985.
"Something About You" - Level 42
Also, "Tenderness" by General Public
So you have listed "The 450 best songs of the '80s", and Robbie Dupree's hit single "Steal Away" is nowhere to be found. Wow.
You missed Whitney Houston (who happens to be one of the greatest singers of the 80's...also there should be more madonna songs on there....
How can you even start to list top 20 of 1980's without GhostTown - sums up UK for most of the decade - genius
who sings the song pain seven years of the 80s
Just saying, I'm Free (Heaven Helps The Man) by Kenny Loggins is MORE then worthy to be in the top 10.
Andre Tong.... The song is keep on runnin by Y&T
Level 42- Something About You is never on any list. It should be. What about Howard Jones! He still rocks!
who sings the song pain seven years of the 80s
help,help.help please
How did the ballads not make it on here? When people think of the great sounds, great movies, and Prime Americana that was the 80's, those are the songs that they remember. Not all of the pseudo-disco crap on this list.
O.k really. Every Michael Jackson song created in the eighties needs to be on this list. He is the King. Long Live Michael!
who sings ... pain seven years of the 80s
There are four/4 Queen songs on this 80's list Another one bites the Dust, Under Pressure, Flash, Crazy little thing called Love, I love that they put alot of Queen songs on this 80's list, Freddie Mercury was the best.
where is the damned!!!!? all the phantasmagoria album is amazing.
shamez no one mentioned crowded house
My favorite song "things can only get better" wasn't on here. I love that song. Howard Jones best song by far and away.
there are many great songs that you have neglected to include on this list. i am disappointed. you have no cyndi lauper....no really great madonna songs, you missed out on a lot of great music.
could you give simple minds a good thanks they a good band
Im trying to find a song, I cant remember the lyrics or song title... But I'm wondering if you guys could attempt to help me..
It's an animated cartoon type song that came out in the 80s or 90s if I remember correctly... And he is in a tall building and fires a rope over to another building and goes into this girls apartment... If I remember correctly the apartment is set on fire some how..
I think it's "mr 'something' "
It's seriously doing my head in and I'm sorry I don't have heaps of details on it... I've been trying to find it for hours now :/
QUEEN Another one bites the Dust should be in the top 5 Queen were one of the great(est) Bands of the 80's.

This is THE GREATEST LIST EVER WRITTEN! I'd be proud to buy your book. I hope there's one in the future.
