The Isaac Hayes RIP Top Ten Samples Tribute Video
64Funk Legend Isaac Hayes 8/20/42 - 8/10/08
This stalwart of the Stax label which specialized in "Southern Soul" was a Memphis icon. His albums Hot Buttered Soul, Black Moses & of course the soundtrack to the blaxpoitation classics Shaft & Truck Turner were his best known works. His performance at the Academy Awards in 1972 still goes down as the greatest musical performance in Oscar history. Later that night he became the first African-American non-actor to win an Oscar. He won several grammys as well.
He was also an actor who was most memorable as The Duke of New York in the film Escape From New York! He recently appeared in the film Hustle & Flow about a struggling rapper from his hometown of Memphis. But no one could have foreseen the immediate impact on pop culture as the casting of Ike as Chef on the Comedy Central cartoon South Park. Rest in Peace.

Ludacris version of Walk on By is amazing but I prefer Wu Tang's Can't Go To Sleep because it recaptures the soulfulness of the original. RIP Mr. Hayes.
Thanks for the memories and tribute DJF. You got some smooth moves too.
I think as an actor, Hayes was most famous for doing Chef's voice on South Park. Does that count as being an actor, actually? If it does, I'd say many many people know him for that too. I didn't know he was in any movies. Maybe that's a cultural thing though, I watch S. Park and I don't watch pop movies. Great hub though, Hayes was a genius, and that signature deep voice still gives me goosebumps. He will be missed.
